It means dont do something out of anger that will damage you more than it does anyone else.

ex: I am mad at my sister so I am going to break this ipod that she gave me to get revenge. That would just result in me being the more one pissed because I broke my ipod and now it is of no use to me.

...best example I could come up with in simple terms, sorry. hehe

Great question! I hope this explains it.

It basically means you should not be vengeful.

An extreme example might be: Someone cuts you off in traffic, so you catch up to them and smash into their car. In this case, "cutting off your nose" would mean you are ruining your own car, and "to spite your face" would mean you did it to get revenge on the other driver.
