Since when do most schools use PCs? When the hell did this happen? Every single school I've ever been to uses Macs exclusively. This whole idea about the business world using PCs is nonsense, and completely irrelevant as the MacBook can dual-boot with Windows. Businesses exist to make money, schools exist to educate. These are two entirely different goals. It's been proven time and time again that Macs are better for education. They're increasingly better for business, as well. Everyone I know who owns a MacBook absolutely loves it. I have a MacBook Pro, myself. Macs are worth every single penny.

A macbook would be a very good choice for a student because they are very user-friendly and the operating system is way more dependable than windows. Also, if you need to run programs that only work on windows, you can install windows on a macbook and use windows at the exact same time as mac OS X. THis means you could use a program such as internet explorer at the exact same time as you were using a very useful program such as iMovie. Also, Mac offers and education discount, and will give you a considerable discount on your computer and software as long as you are going to an accredited college or university. The next best choice besides a macbook would definitely be a Toshiba Satellite. If you do not want the Mac operating system, get a Toshiba Satellite. They are the best Windows laptops on the market and can handle any program or combination of programs available today.

Macs are good but the best type of computer for use in a school room is a Tablet PC. These allow you to take notes and to annotate documents in your own handwriting.

I prefer what is called a slate which has a detachable or detached keyboard. If you aren't typing in class, you just take the screen (in effect) and you write on it. These are the lightest to carry around (mine weighs about 3 pounds).

The other type is called a convertible and it has an attached keyboard so that it can be opened and used like a regular laptop or the screen can be turned around and folded against the keyboard and it will work like a slate.

Aside from the big manufacturers, you might check Motion Computing (which is the company that made mine). You might also browse around Microsoft's Tablet PC site.

Stay away from Mac. A lot of schools don't provide support /software for Macs but they do for PC's. Plus, most professional workplaces use PC's, so you're better off getting used to that OS rather than Mac.

Plus, Mac's are much more expensive and they are really toy computers more than work computers.

Are you going to college next year? If so, call the school and see if they have a purchase program. That usually will get you a discount plus tech support and insurance.

Both Macs and PC's are fine. I use both and either will work well.

Question is what do you need? If the school uses 'only' pc's you may have some headaches going with mac, might consider the pc. Especially if they give you software to run.

If the school uses a mix of pc and mac, or all macs, go with the mac for sure. I love the mac interface and stability.

FYI, macs can run most pc software with an emulator.
