Because of their intelligence, curiousity, agility, and playfulness, it's really quite easy to get rats to do some tricks. But remember, not every rat is interested in doing every trick. Movies have many different rats to play the role of one rat because each rat has a special talent.

I have many rats and each one has it's favorite tricks. If you have just one rat then there are some tricks he will like and others he won't like.

The easiest tricks I have taught my rats have been to: come to their name, stand up on their hind legs (begging), climbing ropes, walking the length of a rope tied between two table legs, crossing hand over hand, playing with a piece of string, wrestling with my hand, climbing a ladder, chasing my hand (makes them go in circles), chasing me down the hall, and going through a maze of tunnels. All of which are a rat's natural behaviors to begin with. Use your imagination, and as long as it doesn't hurt the rat, go for it. I've always wanted to teach my rats how to ride in a remote-controlled car......but I don't have one.

I use Rice Krispies to train my rats. It's the only time they get this little treat. Please do not use peanut butter when training your rats. PB is a choking hazard. And don't starve them out of a good diet just for the purpose of training them. Using a bland, boring staple diet is for lab rats, and yours is a pet rat.

I would prefer to talk you through the trick-training as explaining here will make this answer very long. E-mail me at spazrats@yahoo.ca.

Rats are great pets and REALLY smart. They can be taught almost anything you can think of! I have trained rats to come when called, stand up and blow you a kiss, circle, cross ladders, etc. if you want to trin em, feed them a bland diet, like rat chow, and train them with tasy things like peanut butter (just as much as they can eat in a second).
