Asante Samuel was named the franchise player for NE, but when you think of Patriots, the player that pops to your head is T Brady. Can there be more than two franchise players per team?

The benefit to the team is that the franchise tag allows them to protect a key player. The protection is in the fact that if another team is interested they would have to give up high future draft picks and the orginal team reserves the right to match any offer. The benefit to the player is the franchise tag guarantees them a salary equal to the average of the top 5 at their position.

the franchise tag is used for free agency and it benefits the team because if anybody signs asante samuel the patriots will get draft compensation in terms of i believe 1 or 2 first round picks so it's good for the team but it sucks for the player as he is pretty much limited in terms of negotiation rights either he signs a long term deal with the patriots or he has to take a 1 year deal worth more or less the amount of the top player at his position and then go through the whole process again next year if he doesn't sign a longterm contract i hope this helped you out at all

Only ONE Franchise Tag per team. Manning has it. The Owners do this SOMETIMES, so they can CUT the guy from the team. This can also work to the benefit of the man being tagged, because now he is a free agent, and can negotiate a possibly better contract with another team. I THINK a Tag means that a players free agency is controlled by the team, one year before his contract is over, controlling whether or not he can accept offers from other teams, too. I don't think Peyton Manning will ever be worrying about the tag. If HE ever gets so bad Indy wants him out, I think HE'LL RETIRE!! Same with (Greg) Brady-boy.

He wasn't NAMED the franchise player. He was GIVEN the FRANCHISE TAG. That is only given to a FREE AGENT. It really doesn't mean you are the Franchise STAR. See where your confusion is coming in? As to the benefit you get paid the avg. of the top 5 paid in your position or 150% of your last year's salary, whichever is greater. The team's benefit is that it basically ties you down to them for the year.

They put that tag on him because he is a free agent. If they can't sign him or another team signs him they have to pay or compensate his former team. Draft picks or cash.
