This is about the only thing chevy ever did that made a whole lot of since really was these two engines. DO not get me wrong I am a BOW TIE FAN threw and threw. Chevy is all I will own. The external parts can go from 305 to 350 vise versa. Now once inside that is the difference piston size valve size etc... You can get the engine number off the back of the block right under the intake. Or sometimes on the side of the block on the drivers side near the front of the engine it will say what it is.

The best way to find out for sure is to look at the casting numbers stamped on the top of the left bellhousing mount (behind the left head). You can take these numbers and cross them in a Chevy small block casting numbers guide (you should be able to find one on-line). Anything else is unreliable, as the car is 30 years old, and it's hard to tell if it has ever had an engine change. Externally, these engines are the same otherwise, and most parts will interchange. The only real difference is the bore and valve sizes.

there really is a difference in a 305 and 350 engine. I have a 305 engine and my husband has a 350. I can use parts from his car and they will fit without a problem.

First off, what year? New or original paint? Go to the car, open the hood, open it. On the radiator shroud, it'll say 5.0L (305cid) or 5.7l (350cid). If not, 305cid's have a 2bbl carburetor on top of the intake manifold, the 350cid has a 4bbl. To determine that, take off the cover (the round thing on top of the engine) off the air cleaner, You will see silver cover on openings, either 2 OR 4. Happy Bowtie Dreams!!!

Check the following site for SBC engine codes:
http://www.nastyz28.com/sbc/sblock.html
The second page of the site is where you'll find the engine codes listed. By the way, extrernal parts for sbc's are nearly always interchangeable (except for late models, which are slightly different, therefore necessitating engine identification.
