you're idea is to propagate ,that is to raise a new plant from your existing rubber tree,,the answers you have deal, with the various known methods of propagation, the cut bit dipped in rooting hormone would be called a cutting, this stands a good chance but is not always successful, putting down more than one cutting improves your chances.Standing in water till roots appear is a safe bet & an easy method, tying around a branch after removing a ring of bark is 'air layering',almost foolproof but one needs patience, take your pick, your friend is going to be very happy with her new plant when it 'takes',i have always believed that you can never go wrong with a gift of a plant.

Hi,
You need to decide what part of the plant you want to give away first. Next take a sharp knife and cut a 1 cm band all the way around the stem. So you need to remove a 1 cm band of its bark or skin.
Next take a small bag and a rubber two rubber bands with some cotton wool! Cut the bottom away from the bag - you should have a plastic bag with no bottom now! Next cut down one side. Cut the two rubber bands. Place the bag around the open wound. Fix in place with the first rubber band. Next put your cotton wool into this area, ensure you have the cotton Will all the way around the wound. Soak the cotton wool and close the bag around the wet cotton wool. Next fix the top of the bag around the wet cotton wool and seal with the other rubber band.
Keep wet for around a month to six weeks, you will have roots by then. Remove this part of the pant and repot!
I am sorry for the long answer but this is the way I do it. I have been growing trees, bonsai etc for years this way.
Good luck... let me know how you get on!

What you are trying to do is called "cloning". That's right you are now a mad scientist. The easiest way is to use a rooting hormone. This is available at any good garden center, I use the gel. Cut the branch at least four nodes, (groups of branches), from the bottom, but not the top center. (That would deform your plant). Use a sharp razor, and cut at a forty five degree angle. If you can do this under water it helps, if not place immediately in clean cool water. Prepare some coco-peat by soaking in water. Take the cutting and dip it in rooting gel, place quickly into media. Voila...It will root in a week, instead of six, and can be planted in soil. Avoid feeding the new plant any fertilizer for a few weeks.
