My friend is going into the doctor on monday and they will ask if she needs a pap smear if she has had sex. She has had sex(and later found out the guy was sleeping around) and she wants one to know she is okay, but her family is really into religion. My question is... if you go into an appoint and need a pap smear will it show up on your insurance. Her parents can'T know about what she has done otherwise the consequence could be severe.

Depending on how her insurance is shown will make a big difference. I personally had the same thing happen to me when I was 16 and while I was there they gave me a pregnacy test and everything (standard protocal) and yes my mom found out that I went. If she is fearful that it will show up (and yes it will.. but with code names that are easy to decifer) tell her to go to the local health department and they will do it for free or like 20 bucks. It is good that she wants to know.

The workers at the health department have to keep it a secret (by law) but other patients there might see her so tell her to schedule it at a real oddball time or something. Like 10:30... most folks are at work and won't take a break till 12.

Hope all of this helps and tell her to be sure to always use condoms! That goes for you too!!!!!

Paps smears should be done yearly when a girl turns anywhere from 16-18 regardless of whether she is sexually active or not. Yes, a pap will show up on insurance. Mine always do. If your friend is younger than 18, she can go to Planned Parenthood. They will do a pap and STD check for free, and are not permitted to tell anyone (including parents.)

She should be having a pap whether she is having sex or not. Her mother should know that. Pap smears are not only for women that are having sex but for the early detection of any abnormalities (regardless of sexual activity). If her parents don't understand that maybe her doctor can explain it to them. The doctor can't reveal that she has had sex anyway.

Her parents shouldn't be upset about her having a pap smear. This is a good thing.

Unless they get an itemized bill of each test that was done no it won't show up on the insurance but they will call or send out sheet with her test results on it. I would think she would be better off coming clean with her parents and suffer the consequences than to find out by accident.

Pap msears are normally billed as part of a yearly exam. It shoulnt be billed seperately. If your friend is scared about the risks of std. Ask for complete bloodwork to be done.
Pap smears are a great tool to detect cervical cancer. Standard pelvic exams and cultures inluding bloodwork help diagnose std and HIV. Thanks hope this helps.

I can only answer for NY State . In my state OB/GYN doctors/clinics are not allowed to contact a parent when a child comes in for things like that . If your friend is afraid of it showing up on the insurance bill then she may need to go to a free clinic. They are free & confidental...Good Luck
