Each sound is assigned a unique number and the number is converted to binary. Binary numbers are used because a computer chip can only hold ones and zeros (a "one" is a positive electrical charge and a "zero" is no charge).
The chip inside an iPod holds millions of binary digits that are translated back into regular numbers during playback. The regular numbers are then interpreted by an audio program into a stream of tones and frequencies that we hear as music.

The plastic doesn't play music. It's the electronic components inside and the programming on them.
