No, if your over 18 all you have to do is go to the court house, change your name and pay what ever it is. You also have to have your birth certificate changed.

Most states have similar rules for name changes, with fairly minimal fees charged. You can have a lawyer help you, but you can probably do it yourself unless there are special circumstances that might lead a judge to question/deny your petition. You will need to convince the judge that you are not making the change to avoid debts/creditors, you probably cannot choose a name that is an obscenity or slanderous, and you need to be of legal age.

I recommend you call the Circuit Court Clerk (may be called Superior Court Clerk, or Civil Court Clerk) in the county in which you live, tell him/her you are hoping to obtain a legal name change, and ask if they have a form or procedure to be followed.

Laws, procedures and filing fees vary by state. Here in California, the filing fee is $320 for a name change petition. You also have to purchase a series of ads in the newspaper to publicize the petition.

Overall, the procedure isn't that complicated and you can get a package with instructions from the court clerk's office.

Every state has different fees and requirements. Your best bet is to call the vital statistic office where you live to find out exactly what you need. Why would you want to change your name Charlotte is a pretty . Don't you think your parents will be upset. I would be if my kids changed there names. Think about it. Your whole family will probably always use your birth name anyway? Good luck
