Nuclear power is quite effective in supplying energy but many countries do not use it because they fear an accident. Nuclear weapons were developed in the cold war to prevent invasion (threat of nuclear strike).

It was invented a long time ago, in the 1940's. It has since been refined a little in certain ways. People are not constantly re-inventing it. There are a number of uses for radioactive materiel's (nuclear), which were not invented but existed in the earth (though there is a radioactive element out there that is now widespread, that had disappeared due to the decay process, and now exists in the environment due to nuclear power stations making and leaking it), but what you seem to be thinking of is nuclear power, and nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons judge for yourself, they are destructive and dirty when used & harm civiliens for generations after they were used. Nuclear power may seem ok, but there is a constant emision of radioactive matiriels from them, & the fule to run them often results in people in third world countries being exposed to very hazardous working conditions. Both can impact heavily on the environment, there have been serious nuclear accidents involving power plants, resulting in harm to civilians and the environment.

We know it was developed even before the Cold War era. As one has said in answering this question, that "it is more of a deterrant than a threat - no one knows", seems to be the correct answer to its military use - in my view. However for its peaceful use, one can say that the world will have to rely on nuclear power ultimately because this is an un-exhaustible source of energy. Its harmful radioactivity will no longer be a problem for living beings & the environment when the more recently developed Cold Fission (or Fusion- which one I am not sure) can be commercially used for generating energy. I guess it may not be fair to exclude others developing its peaceful use by just raising questions about the motive being ill - especially when one cannot prove his perception of threat. Its peaceful use should be encouraged - I think.

Nuclear power is relatively clean and efficient in the production of electricity. The extremely hot nuclear rods heat water to produce steam and hence steam powered electricity. This is much the same way that Coal, Oil, or Natural Gas is used to produce electricity. That is, the fossil fuels are burned to heat water to produce steam and steam powered electricity.
The advantage here to nuclear power is that it does not produce the harmful greenhouse gasses that damage the atmosphere and contribute to global warming.
The drawback is if there should be an accident at a nuclear plant, the damage could be catastrophic and may linger for decades. Another drawback is involved in the porcess in creating the nuclear rods used to generate the heat for the steam production process. In order to create the rods, the naturally found uranium must be enriched by a process that could easily be turned to produce weapons grade nuclear material. As a result, the fear is that if a society with ulterior motives produces weapons grade uranium under the guise of produce nuclear power, it could have disaterous effects to whomever the target of the weapons might be.
Therefore, it is a catch 22, allow the proliferation of nuclear technology in order to produce electricity without damaging the atmosphere and take the risk of nuclear weapons being produced as well - OR - encourage the use of fossil fuels worldwide resulting in the destruction of the environment.

in a nutshell:
Nuclear power was discovered & used as a WMD in the 40's. Its now ised to ensure that each counrty is on a level playing field when politicking - its secondary as an energy source - there are enough nuclear weapons to create an ELE (extinction level event - not even bacteria survive) a number of times over.
Thankfully its more deterrent than threat - but u never know

Nuclear power is a very good way to produce electricity with no greenhouse gas output. It will also save people burning fossil fuels. Nuclear energy is needed here in The UK because we will be held to ransom with gas prices. Unfortunately, our Prime Minister 'Mister do nothing but waste money Blair' thinks this will make him unpopular so he won't build the much needed power stations. He is heading this country into a real mess.

Nuclear power is used in many countries as a source of energy. Of course, nuclear power can also be converted into dangerous weapons. So it has good and bad uses.

without the nuclear power, the countries are not able to 'keep up' with he western powers, that is all it is about,. It has always been that way, the arms race and the cold war was all about this and attitudes have not changed. It is about proving the countries worth and power.

it all matters on what you're talking about. if it's nuclear abilities in general, then as always, there's good and bad. one example of a plus is nuclear power. although nuclear power is somewhat risky sounding to us at an everyday level, it's perfectly acceptable in the general scheme. nuclear power allows for higher power at lower costs to power companies. if it's nuclear atms that you're talking about, then that's all polotics.
