Just wondering. What is from a real incident? A real serial killer like that?

RL Stevenson was trying to portray the two different sides of every person, if not humanity, namely, good and evil, and the battle that wages within each of us. Don't think you have any evil in you? Ever laugh at someone else's misfortune? That's the evil side of you coming through. Good vs. evil is one of the eternal themes in literature. Can you think of any others and the books or stories that illustrate them?

Dr. Jeckle Mr. Hyde actually came from a dream that the author had. I read something put out by the son about the book, he said his father would read it in a fever and then go back to write without letting anyone say a word. His wife (the author's wife) actually read the book first and disagreed with something. What we know as Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde is the second draft.

It's one of my favorite horror stories.

the inspiration was the author's experience with someone afflicted with bipolar disorder. Stevenson was known to use cocaine and other mood affecting drugs, so he may have been his own muse.
