I was very slow in high school and really needed to increase my speed I did this one off season and took over a full second of my 40.
1) 10 40 yards sprints forward.
2) 10 40 yards sprints back wards.
3) This one may sound crazy but it works. 10 sprints down hill.
4) Backward leg curls with weights to strengthen the hamstring.

There is an old saying that you can't coach speed. Meaning you either have it or you don't. There are several drills, work out routines, and technique camps that will give you slightly increased quickness but do not expect to go from average sprint speed to suddenly becoming the fastest thing around. Your body style and genetics play a much bigger role that you think.

When I was in high school, we would run 40 yd sprints on an incline, sprint uphill, then turn around do the next sprint downhill. - and repeat about 10 times......don't know how much my speed increased, but (I played DB) I never got beat by an opposing receiver (I don't count the one time i tripped over my own feet)

It's kind of hard to show you over the computer, but if you practice the proper running form at below half speed, concentrating on just the form, doing this repetively, day in and day out, the correct form will be second nature during game time when you are at full speed. Believe it or not, duck walking the length of the field a couple of time per day will definitely help. It will hurt, but it will help. Now this will probably sound stupid, but it is a proven off season workout used by the elite runners in football. CORE WORKOUTS...... LT and Reggie Bush do this during the off season....GOD SPEED!!

Jump roping helps incredibly good. Sprinting hills is also a good workout. Do plyometrics, like jumping onto a box, about a foot and a half high. Make sure you lift your knees to your belly button, because that is how high your knees should go when you run, it's to get you in the habit.

I run the 100 meters in 12.1 seconds, with no training at all, but where I am, its considered pretty fast. 13.4 seconds is very average for a male... maybe a little on the slower side. I haven't started training yet cause I'm in high school, but I'm going to be joining track and field to improve my times. Work on starts, and maintaining top speed. Try to get some bulk muscle, or good muscle in the legs to improve performance.

I felt running down hill increased my stride a little. Sprints, and squat to increase leg strength.
