If I remember correctly, Craig Breedlove's Spirit of America was not based on any particular aircraft. The engine he used was a General Electric J47, which has been used on many different types of a/c, including B-47 (bombers), several fighters and some commercial aircraft.

His design for the fuselage was necessitated by the dictates of the engine and therefore the peculiar shape of the vehicle. The tailfin was added to provide stability as were a couple of small canard wings.

I do not know if that was an aircraft or if it was purpose built.
