I know this year the suprise team will be the Phillies.
This is because they have an amazing lineup, great starting pitching and a decent bullpen. Not many people out of Philly know this though because Philly has a few incredible young players.
With Ryan Howard (58 Hr 149 RBI .313), Chase Utley (32 HR 102 RBI (over.300)), Pat Burrel (29 HR 95 RBI), Jimmy Rollins (25 HR 85 RBI), and the starting pitching of Freddy Garcia (17 wins) Cole Hamels (9 wins in 1/2 a season) and the additons of aces Jamie Moyer, Brett Myers and Adam Eaton they will almost definatly make the playoffs.

you said surprise team. I see lots of teams that would not be a suprise. Like the Red Sox. They always put a good team on the field. The Giants? It wasn't too many years ago they were in the playoffs. The surprise team this year will be the REDS. They have a very strong outfield. They have solid pitching and a decent infield. The REDS were 2 games under .500 last year. The Cardinals were only 5 games above .500 and they won it all. I think that the REDS will give the Cards a run for their money.

As much as it pains me to admit it, the San Francisco Giants are going to sneak up on everybody this year. While everyone is distracted by the soap opera that is Barry Bonds, the Giants have built a very solid veteran line-up - while getting younger at the same time - and have the potential to have the best starting rotation 1 to 5 in the league. Don't underestimate the impact that Barry Zito will have; he's posted some phenomenal numbers with the A's and he's moving to a league with no DH and if Matt Cain continues to build on the success he started last year, the Giants will be reckoned with. The only question mark is the closer, but Benitez is in his contract year and that could mean he'll step it up a notch and become the closer the Giants haven't had since Robb Nen.
My dark horse pick is the Milwaukee Brewers. They play in a WEAK WEAK WEAK division.Tony LaRussa is the most overrated manager of his generation. With the talent he's had in Oakland and St. Louis, he should have won at least 6 World Series titles by now.

The surprise team in MLB this year will be the Pittsburgh Pirates. Even though they finished with a record of 67-95, they finished the second half with a winning record. To build on that they have the power hitter that they have been looking for in Adam Laroche and have added a years experience to one of the youngest starting pitching rotations in the league. Don't be surprised when they go above .500 for the first time in 15 years.

Milwaukee Brewers. They have a very good 5 man rotation, probably the best in the Central. If Prince Fielder starts to hit like Cecil, watch out. There team is young and very talented.

Arizona Diamoondbacks. Randy Johnson may or may not win 10 games, but they have a solid pitching staff. Johnson will help Brandon Webb become even better. They have several good young hitters. The bullpen is a question mark, but they will be an exciting team to watch.

I think the teams that competed and were in the playoffs last year will probably be around the same field this year to make the playoffs. I say the division champs from last year and the wild card teams stay the same except in the NL Central, I think the Cubs take the crown.
Teams I think that will make large improvements are Tampa Bay, Milwaukee, and Texas.

We live in a world where there is very little pitching. The reds have Arroyo, Harang and future star Homer Baily. In a short series a good pitching staff and good hitting will make them a very dangerous team. By the end of september I will post on Yahoo I told you so

Well, since life is perverse and I love the Giants, like the Mets and hate the Dodgers, I'd say the Dodgers, followed by the Mets, then the Giants!
