I want to get a MA in English Literature, but I have no idea what to do a thesis on. I have on real areas of interest that could classify as "original research", I just enjoy reading and writing about literature (especially Shakespeare). So is there an exercise I can do to help me figure out what a good thesis topic would be?

All of the schools I've looked at want the applicants to specifically write what they want to do for their thesis in the "personal statement."

It is not unusual for graduate programs to prefer their applicants to have a particular focus in mind.

Since your interest is in Shakespeare (does it extend to Elizabethan drama in general?), you will want to specify this. What is your preferred theory or method of interpretation? Do you enjoy attending to issues of gender, or of sexuality, or of performance theory, or of poetics, or what?

You needn't have a specific title for your projected thesis topic. You just need to demonstrate that you have a grasp of your specific area of interest, and of the theories or methods you wish to use in your analysis of literature.

Best wishes to you!

You don't have to have a thesis idea before you apply to grad school. Most people develop their thesis project based on the new and interesting things they're exposed to in their courses. They also work with an advisor to decide on what to write.

You will be guided through this process once you're in a graduate program.

I've been in grad school for 5 months and I still don't know my topic either. You will pick an adivsor (probably someone you work with) and your advisor will help you.
