You will need a very large tank, something over 100 gallons. These guys get BIG and territorial and aggressive, even attacking the glass when you come to feed them. They are definitely not a good candidate for a first large cichlid. I'd say that a130 would be the very smallest tank to consider. A 200 would be better, and you will probably wish for two large tanks when they reach sexual maturity. Please do very extensive research before purchasing these fish. Try to include an interview with someone who has raised these animals to adulthood. You are undertaking a very challenging course.---------Good luck.-----PeeTee------ The Wolf Cichlid grows to an adult size of 24".

Considering the massive size of these cichlids and combining it with their aggression and swimming potential, I would say nothing less then 6 feet long to house a pair of them, and 8 feet would really be better. Since they will grow to almost two feet long, the depth of the tank should be at least 24". The standard size of 6 foot tank is 180 gallons, and for long term, nothing smaller then this should be considered.

The typical rule is 1 gallon per inch of fish...so that would calculate to about 10 gallons. HOWEVER as cichlids are very aggressive fish by nature, I would suggest at least 20 gallons. That will allow your fish to grow more comfortably and move around better. My cichlids always seem to get clumsy and tank-destructive when they get bigger---they move a lot of water when they swim.

I'd go with a 35 gallon Hex. As you already know these are agressive fish and the hex shape will help keep them docile, reflections and all. Make sure any fish you put in with. them are capable of hoding their own. Oscars, small red devils and Auratus are all good choices. Have Fun.
