The first successful permanent English settlement in the New World was named for King James I. It was founded in 1607 and was named Jamestown, on Jamestown Island on the James River in what is currently James City County in Virginia.
There were prior settlements intended to be permanent which failed. I suppose the most famous of those is the 1587 settlement at Roanoke Island, in what is currently the state of North Carolina.

King James I-- it's the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown this year. It's in Virginia, in case you didn't know. Queen Elizabeth II is scheduled to visit.
