There are no big American corporations controlling (or even inside) North Korea, Rwanda, Congo... Those places are disasters.
It always amuses me that people who hate Corporate America (like some of these posters) love using computer technology and the internet to tell others how bad big American corporations are. Ironic. These things would not even exist without big corporations. Dell, Cisco, Microsoft, Intel.
Most small businesses will never have the capital it takes to do the research and development that large corporations do. From the idea phase to the commercialization phase takes a ton of money. The past 30 - 50 years have been the most innovative in known world history. All of that happened after big corporations established themselves.
Either they funded the commercialization process -or- they buy out the small businesses with the great ideas to fund the process -or- they invest in the smaller business to become minortiy equity shareholders.
Big corporation do not eliminate competition. I cannot think of anything I have ever bought that did not include a competitors' option.
Don't blame Corporations for the spineless activity of politicians. Individuals gleefully stick their hand out and take anything they can get from the government, also.
It is a choice to work for a big corporation. If someone does not like the work, they can go somewhere else. They can start their own business, noone is stopping them - except bad governments.
=====
And for those of you reading this who actually think that government can fund the R&D effectively, I leave you with this.

In 1936, the federal government published an informational pamphlet on Social Security. It stated:
"…and finally, beginning in 1949, 12 years from now, you and your employer will each pay 3 cents on each dollar you earn, up to $3,000 a year. That is the most you will ever pay."

One program > one multi-trillion dollar government lie or miscalculation. How much was that Enron lie worth?

Big business is always better. For the customer; big business can supply products cheaply and easily to millions of people around the world. For example; in South America big stores sell shampoo and rinse in single-serve plastic containers. Why single serve? Because people are poor, cannot afford to buy a big bottle like we do. So the stores sell single serve quantities, for about 5 cents, and the customer is happy, the store makes money. Everyone wins. A small store could not offer this service.
For the manufacturer, they end up selling millions of products, that creates jobs for employees. Everyone wins.
And if you work for big business, the benefits are better, the pay is better, opportunities for growth is better. If the business is small, and the company is owned by a family, the ONLY people that are going to get promoted; are the chidren of the owners.
I have worked for small business and big business. Big business is always better!!

Big business would be fine if they also had morals and a sense of responsibility. They are quite happy to promote, by sexy advertising, all sorts of things they well know will create addiction among vulnerable people, for the sake of profit, while at the same time lobbying or possibly bribing governments to ensure they do not legislate against them.
It is all very well to argue that they create jobs and wealth, but so do drug producers.
As for their behaviour in third world countries, I think enough has already been written.
Nothing wrong with big companies; they just need to be regulated properly.

Some companies, such as Mcdonalds exploit their workers and try to squeeze as much work out of people for as little money as possible. Also, some big coffee companies pay their workers peanuts for doing jobs and hours that in the west theyd be paid loads for. U just have to look at websites like www.oxfam.com to see this. Big business is good from a shopping point of view however and not all businesses are like this, so i have a kinda mixed point of view on this 1.

When a corporation controls a product in a country, the competion goes out the window and what happens is they will wind up controling the quality, and set their own prices.this is evident on your household utilities like gas and light where there is only one provider, their power is such that they have a major impact on state capitols with well paid lobbyists, allways asking congress to let them raise the utilities and mostly getting away with it

Define "Corporate America?"
Define "small business?"
In you mind, should one ban a public company with revenues of $600 million, and allow a private company with revenues of $2 bil?
How do YOU define it? How should an "ultimate power" arbitrarily decide it?
