in the movies about american settlers how come the people they meet on arrival already have american accents?

does anyone know how the accent evolved. sometimes you can pick out the irish and scottish accent but what was the main accent of america

Because the movies are American, and thus the actors are American.

The early settlers were from England (and dominions), and Spain.

The accent that evolved is a mixture of all European emigres languages. This varies in different regions where larger percentages of particular nationalities settled, eg Boston-English and Irish, Texas-Spanish and European, Maryland-Irish.....

because they're played by american actors. If you watch Roman movies, all the Romans speak with a British Accent. Go figure. The base accent of america is hard to determine since there are so many people that originally came to this country from so many other places, France, Germany, British Isles, Eastern Europe, Spain and of course, the native peoples. Put it all together, add 300 or so years, and viola! An American accent.

accents usually evolve from wherever the original settlers came from. that's why there are so many different ones. people came from all over. there is no "main" accent for America. every country has several accents, depending on where they live. people from different parts of England have different accents...people from different parts of France have different accents...etc etc movies don't worry about accents so the people watching can understand the lines.
