Sir Francis Drake, Vice Admiral, (c. 1540 – January 28, 1596) was an English privateer, navigator, slave trader, politician and civil engineer of the Elizabethan era, considered by many a pirate. He was second-in-command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588. He died of dysentery while unsuccessfully attacking San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1596.

The Golden Hind , captained by Sir francis drake, undertook one of the most historic, and exciting voyages of all time. between 1577-1580, the Golden Hind circumnavigated the world, making vital discoveries before returning home with amazing treasures.
The Golden Hind Museum ship has been based in Brixham harbour since 1963 during which time it has enthralled many thousands of visitors both young and old alike. 400 years after the death of Sir Francis Drake there is still massive worldwide interest in this remarkable man and his achievements.

Drake was not a pirate, he was a privateer. There was a difference. A pirate was a criminal in any jurisdiction, a privateer had authority from his government to attack his country's enemies.
