I believe the invention that has most greatly affected the world is currency. Look at civilizations that did not use currency versus those that do. A lack of currency tends to lead to technology deficient cultures that work together to focus on the common good. Social environments that rely on currency are much more advanced yet suffer from greed. (Money is the root of all evil.)
