As a rural school bus driver in Victoria, Australia, and I can honestly say that the kids on my bus are very good, and as such I see no CURRENT need for camera surveillance, in our case, in the medium term future. Can't say much for their choice of music that they want to listen to on the bus radio - but then, it keeps them happy and eventually I will get used to it! By the way, there are somewhere like 75 busses ( all private contractors ) operating out of our 2 schools, one primary, grades prep to 6 and one secondary, years 7 to 12, and I have both primary and secondary students on my route. Both schools have a WORKING process, whereby, in the unlikely event of a disciplinary problem, the matter is immediately addressed on the day by the Bus Supervisor and they can/will ban kids from using the service if necessary. This system works very well.
Having said that, from what I have observed of the bashings, stabbings, and shootings at schools and on school buses in the US, I don't think that I would be willing to drive a school bus over there that DID NOT have a WORKING camera installed and maybe a taser, so that the driver can exercise some control over the kids! Just kidding about the taser - maybe?!
I think that your county officials, covertly, should spend a week travelling around on your busses to see first hand what the driver has to deal with, other than the task he/she is there for. This should change their attitudes pretty quickly! Get out and rattle their cages a bit, write letters to them and the local papers, ring your local radio station, and get every one else you know to do the same. Maybe you can shame these turkeys into doing what you are paying their wages for.
Good luck with it and give them GREIF!

I am sixteen-years-old and I have rode a school bus all of my life, I have seen so many things happen on buses that could have been prevented had a camera been on the bus. Just the thought of a camera being on a bus scares children enough to control themselves wile around the camera. Bus drivers have to pay attention to the road so keeping an eye on the kids is not a task they are equipped for. A camera is their eyes if something bad was to happen and they were actually watching the road like they are suppose to be. If you have been watching the news lately you would see that cameras are coming in handy when it comes to fights and bully's, 1/2 of the time bus drivers dont even realize that a fight is taking place until it has been going on for a wile, plus when the fight begins children crowd around making it harder for the bus driver to break up the fight. Cameras show who initiated the fight and what happened, they will scare (SOME) bully's and because of the camera the fight will be stopped. If what I just said wasn't clear enough for you YES I AGREE 100% WITH PUTTING CAMERAS ON THE BUS!!!!!!!

I think it's an excellant use of money, and I believe you and a bunch of others that think alike should go to the meetings and demand that cameras be put on all buses. There is absolutely nothing wrong with video documentation of the bus ride. If that don't work, then contact the local TV crew, and tell them about it. I bet they'd jump on that in a second. Best of luck to you.

Big Brother is always a bad idea, in my opinion. Saying "It's for the children" doesn't make it any less invasive. The proper thing to do would be to 1. pay bus drivers a decent wage, 2. hire drivers that will pay attention to what is going on on the bus, and 3. actually punish the troublemakers on the bus.

Interesting...........people have no problem with cameras in school buses to keep an eye on children, they have no problem with cameras at intersections to mail tickets to people running red lights, and they have no problem with cameras in malls and public places in case a crime is committed. But listen to people howl and complain about their civil liberties when the NSA monitors overseas calls by suspected terrorists.

I think cameras on the buses is a great idea and should be implemented on all of the school buses.

I am a substitute teacher and I know how kids act in the classroom! I think that cameras on buses serve two purposes; safety and deterrence. Some parents think their children aren't capable of bullying or abusing others until they see it on film. I am all for it.

Big brother is grooming them to be "good citizens" in the forthcoming New World Order/Police State, where they will accept the eye in the sky, never ask questions and always "behave" ....... but in their minds, they will ask why their parents and grandparents saw this coming but chose to do nothing about it.

I agree with you. Plus, the bus driver will be watched as well. They should also have GPS units on every bus so they can be located at any moment. (You can also measure the speed the bus is traveling with a GPS unit.)
