Bracketbuster refers to a game that could shake things up as far as seeding goes in the NCAA tournament. It is mostly for mid major schools since they often dont have a chance to get an at large bid.

A bracket buster game is a game that makes or breaks a teams chances at getting into the NCAA tourney. It has nothing to do with contracts or where a team is going to be seeded. Its based solely on whether a teams will get into the tourney or not. The Southern Ill. vs. Butler game really wasnt a bracket buster game because they will both be there in March, but it was played during this time frame. Take for example the Iu vs Michigan game today. For Michigan it was a bracket buster game. Lose and you have no chance of getting in the tourney, win and your dreams are still alive. THATS A BRACKET BUSTER GAME.

About four or five years ago, ESPN made a television deal with a group of mid-major conferences under the idea that the mid-major conferences wanted an opportunity to improve their RPI's for at-large and seeding purposes. So about ten conferences now play non-conference games this weekend against teams in these leagues. The matchups are set in late January based on how well certain teams are doing which is how we got matchups like Southern Illinois vs. Butler and Northern Iowa vs. Nevada.
