I just bought a bit. Didn't measure it.... it is just a regular bit and I put it on my bridle. Then I wondered... what if is it too long or short?

Of course. The standard size for your average 14 1/2 hh to 16 1/2 hh horse is a 5 inch bit, measured along just the mouth piece. Larger horses such as warmbloods and drafts use a 5 1/2 to 6 inch bit. They also make bits in 4 inch and 4 1/2 inches for small and large ponies. You can even find bits for minis at specialty shops.

you're mistaking rotation with leverage, or ability. think of of a teeter-totter, close to the middle, you like so lots greater weight to make the teeter totter, top? that is like a short shank. Now think of which you're on the very end of the teeter-totter, only sitting there makes it bypass down. it incredibly is the long shank. so a very small flow by ability of the long shank equals a super sort of weight on the reins. So an identical flow on a protracted shank is felt lots greater heavily than on short shanks. Conversely, a tiny flow on the long shanks is felt, jointly as this variety of small, diffused flow on the fast shanks ought to no longer be felt in any respect. this suggests that in case you're a very practiced rider, driving a nicely knowledgeable horse, you're in a position to experience lighter in a protracted shanked bit than a much less-complete rider can do with a short shank. finding on the place you're measuring the rotation. in case you degree on the mouthpiece, it must be an identical, yet the place the reins connect, the longer shanks will holiday farther. wish this facilitates!
