You could get a civilian job with the military, or in government. Many positions require degrees and pay well. Almost any job you can find in the corporate world is also needed in government, with the possible exception of salesman. You could also work for a non-profit charity that you feel strongly about.
Many people "serve" by making good money in the corporate world and donating to charities.

One great way to help your country is to become an Americorps member. Think of it as the domestic peace corps. It's a year long commitment, you receive a living stipend and an education award when you finish your year of service you receive an education award to pay off student loans or go towards future schooling costs. There are many different kinds of programs whether it be working with children, low-income families, or organizations such as Habitat for Humanity. Some involve travel but depending on where you live there is probably an Americorps State program in your area and you could work locally.
It really is a great experience. It isn't exactly high paying but it looks amazing on a resume.

There are many ways to serve the country. You could volunteer with a political party, you could volunteer to work at a polling location during an election, etc.
If you are looking for a career path perhaps you could try working in the police force (or even as a dispatcher if you don't like the idea of working as a cop), the Postal Service, conservation Corps, become a health or agricultural inspector or even a code enforcer officer. I hope this helps.

There are MANY "professional" jobs working for the federal government in support of the military...
However, if you are not a veteran and unwilling to serve in the military why should we hire you to work in civil service in support of the military?
Maybe you should look into the Peace Corps...oh but that's voluntary and you want "decent pay"...
