Because it was populazied in America. It grew with the country throughout the 20th Century. Baseball struggled through the same problems as America for decades. It is America's sport because everyone enjoys it too.

Baseball is widely known as the Great American Pastime. It is highly recognized by all segments of the population. From early childhood, family, friends and the media expose students to baseball. A great majority of the population either plays baseball or softball as a recreational sport in grade school. Students are also exposed to this sport in Physical Education. Nearly all Americans participate in our national pastimeoften without knowing it. Preschoolers sing Take Me Out to the Ball Game. People talk about ballpark estimates, use the expression three strikes and youre out, quote lines from Whos on First, watch baseball movies and wear baseball caps. The game and its heros have become a form of cultural shorthand through which we-and others-define and recognize America. Baseball provides a basis to incorporate all disciplines.

In part because it is played so often. If you like football, you get to see your team in 16 regular season games and maybe have a shot at the playoffs. There are 10 times as many baseball games, they are played in better weather by and large, and the price of admission for a baseball game is cheaper. There are parts of the country where football is the more popular pastime, but you are right, on a national level it has to be baseball.

The sport grew with the country after the Civil War and there was a professional baseball league 48 years before the NFL. Every town had a "town team" and you could play in a cornfield or a sandlot. Minor league teams were everywhere and you could dream of being Cap Anson to Babe Ruth to Mickey Mantle and make a lot of money playing a kids sport. Though football, soccer and basketball has replaced it in popularity, the myth from a bygone era has persisted...and it has endured. Of all the sports, it is the purest of Americana, and while your grandfather might not remember all his grandkids names, he could probably tell you about Stan Musials batting stance

Because it is the true American Sport. Read Michael Mandelbaum's book "The Meaning of Sports" I haven't read the section on basketball, but I though it did a great job explaining what many people wonder-"Why are people so obsessed with sports?" It goes into how baseball, football, and basketball are all representative of the times that they were formed, one of my favorite books of all time.

National mythology and historical timing (along with the deliberate creation of new sports to replace English sports like cricket and rugby (with baseball and American football) and to define an American state that had thrown off its ties to England).
Read all about A.G. Spalding and the creation of the myth of Abner Doubleday and Cooperstown.

In the late 19th and early 20th century before the hose that Ruth built, people would take chairs and sit in the sun to watch a ball game and pass the time. Thus comes the phrase, the american passtime. This is the truth.

Don't know this for a fact, but I think baseball is the oldest professional sport played in the US. If not, I would say it is the first sport to draw such a large fan base

Baseball is America's greatest past time because many of us while looking back on our fondest memeries, we remember the days that we would play catch with our dads in the backyard or seeing the face of our children when we take them to see there favorite team.
