Route 66....chicago to southern Ca....it's a slice right out of americana. Make sure you stay over night in the teepee hotel in Arizona. Being a Floridian I would also suggest US-1 from Maine to Miami...enjoy...I have always wanted to do both but have never had the vacation time for it. Once in Ca., the coastal highway is really beautiful...have dome different sections of taht a few times, just spectacular views.

fly into san francisco and spend some time there, hit some national parks like yosemite and some in southern utah (bryce canyon or zion, etc) go to the grand canyon and maybe a stop in crazy las vegas, skip most of the central part of the us and spend more time one of the coasts.
highlights of the us: San Francisco, NYC, the parks, New Orleans (yes, still great) Washington DC, Boston, the Rocky Mountains and pretty much anywhere on the West coast (Oregon and Washington are gorgeous)
Enjoy!

Fly into Detroit drive across the state to either Muskegon or Ludington...either place has car ferries to cross lake Michigan to Wisconsin (summer only), Ludington to Manitoba takes around 4 hours ...Go north for the UP of Michigan....west for Minneapolis and St Pauls...South for Chicago.
Its a big country and too many places to mention.
You will proberly be told of many places on here, up to you to choose where to start and finish your trip.
One tip...make sure you buy a good road atlas...'Rand Mcnally' is one of the better ones.

I'd suggest starting way up in Augusta, Maine and going all the way over to Los Angeles, California on the west coast. Be sure to visit a lot of historical areas so you can further understand and enjoy our wondrous country. Oh, yeah! Be sure to go to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania!

It depends your interests and the time of year. If you are interested in history, I'd recommend Washington, DC, then south to the Williamsburg, Virginia area. You'll learn a lot about American history. The best time to visit is in the fall when all the kids are back in school. If you're looking to party hardy, I can't help you.

I am from Ohio, so I suggest Ohio. You can go to Amish country. I would also suggest going to Longaberger Baskets and do a tour. They make wooden baskets here in Ohio. Also some museums to see. There is a lot of hidden potential in Ohio.
