Black is basic, but navy is much chicer.
Sobriety is key, men, wear a black suit with a long black tie and a white shirt.
Women, trousers are OK (no denim and no gauchos, capri or anything like that...I'd go as far as to say, no skinny/cigarette pants). Skirts are the classic norm, wear knee-length, above the knee and your pushing it, absolutely no miniskirts. For a top, try to stay away from sleeveless, specially if there's a religious service, go 3/4 to long sleeve...definitely stay away from spaghetti straps, or worst of all: strapless.
The fabric should NOT be sheer, silky or have any kind of sequins or sparkles.

For jewelry, pearls are most acceptable; but you can wear almost anything as long as it's not flasy / trashy.

Remember, it's respect for the friends and relatives who are in their time of tremendous grief; not your chance to score, or show off the results of your new Pilates regime.

Ladies: In situations like these (were your not sure what's appropriate clothing-wise, think WWJKOW? (What would Jackie Kennedy Onassis wear?)

For a guy, a stylish tie that brings out the black in the tuxido and for a lady where a black flared dress with some "bling" added to dress it up.

I think you should dress up as Morticia from the Adams family. You always want to make a statement at a funeral.

Dress up as the Devil.
Prance around the casket. Point at the deceased and shout, "Your azz is mine now, sucka!"
