Watermelons come from Africa where water is a precious commodity and you could tempt animals to eat you by offerring them water. Wild watermelons are barely the size of grapefruits so you could imagine them growing on trees. But they grow on vines which trail on the ground. Cultivated watermelons are now so big, the ground is the only place that'll prevent either the vine or the fruit from being damaged as the fruit develops.

Imagine watermelons falling from trees and hitting people on the head. That would be funny. Your friend is right.
