Yes they did. The first laptop that you could buy was called the Osborne and it had a small CRT screen. Although calling it a laptop is kind of a misnomer. It really wasn't even that portable, sometimes called a "luggable".

Um... no, CRT projection requires a tube, that corresponds in length to the size of the screen, to have a 12 inch screen you would have a laptop 3 times the size of a brief case!
