my dad lives in Alaska, and he has money in the freezer wraped in aluminum foil .. He's had it there for 11 years. Will that hurt the money?

He's old and he don't trust banks. He also has a gun, so no one will take it. I just wondered if it will damage the money?

If the money is 11 years old, it's possible he could have some money that's worth something more than face value. If he has any money that are star notes and low serial numbers, they could be valuable. Remember that money changed over at about 1999 to the "new" style, so he has the old style money from approx. 1995 series. Here's what kind of serial # you are looking for should you guys go through it: 00002691* (star at the end of the serial number) or 00666600 (unique serial number). The stars with low serial are the most valuable. Water damage is an issue with the notes! That will decrease the value, so you better figure out the best way to thaw the notes without damaging them. Rip them, bend the corners, fold them down the center...you are ticking off value.

Oh and I didn't see that anyone said that money is not paper...it's actually mostly cotton, so it's not like it's going to ruin the money.

Aluminum Foil Wrapping Paper

Nothing hurts paper money! If you only knew the eccentric places that people put it, it would totally GROSS you out!! (different places on the human body....in shoes and socks....). Older people used to bury it in a coffee can in the back yard. Of course you cannot tear the serial # off and it is illegal to burn it.
Since your update on your original question.....there's nothing wrong with his beliefs!! He's entitled to his lifestyle, our constitution protects that! NO IT WILL NOT HURT THE MONEY! I disagree with the person that says not in the freezer. Granted, yes, burglars do look there, however it sounds as though your Dad has thought about that and that is what the foil is for!

Yes. As a matter of fact it will. Over time, 11 years, it has lost about 64% of its value. Tell your dad to take it out of the freezer and put it into a good conservative mutual fund, such as one of the Fidelity funds. If he had done that 11 years ago, he would now have actually gained considerably in his assets instead of loosing 64% of its value.

It won't hurt the money, but any burglar will look in the freezer because a lot of people hide things in them.

Why on earth would he do that? Why not put it in a bank & collect at least a little interest.

No, but it might hurt his freedom if the IRS finds out he's holding out taxable income.
