Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is a must read for all teens. It is a wonderful book, one of two sci fi books I have ever liked. The other being the companion, Ender's Shadow. The reading level fits perfectly what you described.

Some of my favorites are:
The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. The stories are short and readable and the characters are believable and honest.
The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder.
Night by Elie Weisel
Any book about Abraham Lincoln, especially James MacPherson's book. Lincoln's life can be inspirational to young people. The lessons they learn from Lincoln can help them in their own life.

Good luck getting a teenager to read a book.

My favorite books for teen readers are

Green Rider by Kristen Britain - my teenage niece and I both loved it. It has horses, action, intrigue, magic, a wee little bit of non-icky romance. You won't be able to put it down.

The Ruby in the Smoke by Phillip Pullman - recently adapted for T.V. and on Masterpiece Theater a few weeks ago. It's a great mystery and written for young readers. Actually, any of Pullman's 'Dark Materials' novels would be excellent too.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Crooked by Louisa Luna
Look at MTV books, they're quite interesting if you like things that relate to an average teenage world with the good and the bad:
Worrying about your grades, sex, weed, alcohol, drugs, graduation, family issues, all that good stuff.

This may not be a teen novel but try The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue. Excellent book.

If you're interested in something with social commentary I would suggest Saint Iggy by K.L. Going. It is the story of a teen boy kicked out of high school and whose parents are drug addicts. He decides that he wants to get back into school and tries to discover a way to contribute to society.

If you like paranormal stories and vampires (and don't mind a little romance in your books) you could try Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.

If you like urban fantasies with ghosts, faries and imps you could try The Blue Girl by Charles de Lint.

Hope you find something you like!

The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening is the 1st books in considered one of L. J. Smith's early series, The Vampire Diaries, and replaced into first printed back in the early 90s. This series is definitely considered one of the extra desirable teen horror ones. Leaving a minimum of lots of the formulation in the back of, #a million The Awakening contraptions up the main characters and the midsection love triangle: vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore, whose combat over youthful vampire Katherine in Renassaince Italy brought about their turning, and Elena Gilbert, the human extreme college woman which will renew their centuries-previous feud. quite reccomend for horror and vampire followers.

Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five. They probably won't suggest this in school because of some of the gruesome and sexual themes, but I bet if any of your teachers see you lugging it around they will secretly be proud of you. It is a great book about war.
