Because European Union hegemony would be the end of life in the USA as we know it. We are fighting a war in Iraq now to try and stop the international trade of oil in Euros. The international oil trade, which has been conducted solely in US dollars since the US when of the gold standard, is what has set the value of the US dollar.
In the year 2000, Iraq stated to trade oil in Euros. Jordan and Venezuela soon followed suit in an effort to crash the dollar and the US economy. Iraq was invaded. Iran also started trading in Euros just recently.
If you notice, none of the Eu members are supporting the US in the Middle-East. Only non EU members like England and Norway support the US. The EU sorely wants the international oil trade to be traded in Euros. It would more than double the value of the Euro. Everyone in the EU would be rich overnight. The USA would be turned into a third world country.
There you have it. The reason for an unpopular war in Iraq.
