I agree with George Martin that it is complete rubbish.

its far from unique when virtually every great tune.. which already has perfectly good lyics gets Hi-jacked and re-written by mostly no talent black musicians. Who then take sole writing credit for something which thet obviously didnt write.

I aint tryin to be racist. It just bugs me when i here a perfectly good song ripped to bits by someone with no talent. Why can they not write there own music as well as lyrics. Thats true originality.

ahem...there seems to be a tough crowd...but i will definitely address the real issues here:

I LOVE HIP HOP. Its quite different from what u all know as RAP. There used to be a time when the genre was about the issues that the african american community faced (don't think I didn't notice that some of you above used derogatory terms for blacks). Unfortunately, nowadays commercialized rap has made you all very sour. Its made me sad because it is indeed a poor reflection of blacks and at the same time a poor example for our children who are bombarded with these images. I agree that some of the music that makes it to the airwaves, MTV, Vh1, and BET have gone astray, but remember that its important NOT TO GENERALIZE A PEOPLE AND HATE. That's never the answer. Instead, I seek the truth and artistry in the genre by not taking what mainstream media hands to me. I listen to what makes me happy, inspires me, and helps me to grow. I don't actively search for country music, but I do recognize the talent where recognition is due. I don't throw daggers of hate towards white people for making the music. Perhaps you guys should learn how to minimize your hatred. You sound like you simply do NOT understand matters that are different from your own.

For those with open-minds, try listening to those wonderful artists who, (unfortunately) were not granted the amount of airplay that such foolishness you've seen has:
Nas- "Can't Forget About You", "Still Dreaming", "If I Ruled the World"
The Roots- "Glitches","Break You Off", "Don't Feel Right", "U Got Me"
Lauryn Hill- "Mystery of Iniquity", "That Thing"
Common-"Be", "Go", "Faithful", "I am Music", "Testify"
Tupac- "Letter to My Unborn Child"
Ludacris- "Runaway Love"

Theres no creativity, true musical talent, originality or spirit it in. The beats are created from a computer.. the lyrics make absolutely no sense at all...

On VH1 they had a special on rap and rappers claimed it was to tell the "story of their life" and their "hardships".
I thought it was funny.. barely any of the rap songs out there have anything to do with their lives and things they claim its all about. 95% of rap songs are about money, guns, @ss, cars, getting shot, jewelry and wheels. ..Nothing remotely important or meaningful.

I think rap needs to pass.. its really old, everything sounds the same and now I'm noticing that some rap groups are STEALING beats from rock bands like Ozzy, and old groups such as Kraftwerk! How much lamer can they get? I don't think i want to know..
Of course there wont be the people that support rap on here to say that we're wrong...

I used to think that, but now I don't.

There is crap rap like there is with any type of music. You have to learn that there is some talent out there.

Wycliff Jean
Digital Planets
Snoop Dogg
Maybe even Sean 'puffy' Combs when you get up to par on this

Find the melodies in the beat, in the way they rap, and in the lyrics - that way you can figure out the junk from the talent

Although I do not listen to rap and I do agree with most of what you said I do feel that there is still some talent needed to perform. In good rap you need to be able to keep a beat and rhythm while going outside the beat of tempo and talk fast or slow to get vreative. BUT......sining takes a lot more talent.

Anyone who doesn't understand Rap is obviously not a part of the culture and has not "been there". That does not mean they need to put it down and say it is not an art or not music or "rubbish" as you say.

Just because there is something you don't understand does not mean it isn't good. I didn't like metal for a long time until i was a part of that culture.

so what's your objection to rap that doesn't use samples? phucking idiot. to write off any genre of music makes you sound like a elitist and a moron.

some of the statements people come out with on here are hilarious in their ineptitude/ignorance. until you've gone beyond hearing the odd 50 cent song on the radio, you're not in a position to say 'i'm sick of the whole bling, nonsense'

oh, and: rap = crap, rap has a silent c thing wasn't funny the first time, it sure isn't funny the 126,387th time

I like two or three rap songs, and that's it! Rap wasn't always really sucky, but now it seems like they're letting anyone that can rhyme make a rap album. (NOTE: I don't mean that these people rhyme with talent, I'm talking 'the cat in the hat sat on the mat' kind of rhyming...) I think that it is VERY overrated, and that several rappers should take a year-long hiatus and go to Guam and GIVE OUR EARS A BREAK! Although, Weird Al makes the crappiest songs better. i.e. 'Ridin' Dirty' into 'White And Nerdy', 'Gangsters Paradise' into 'Amish Paradise' etc. Anyone else agree with me? =)

Total W**K!
Looks as though its going back to the fringe where it belongs and we are starting to get bands with talent that write songs with real words and they can even play instruments (sometimes!).
Stuff comes and goes and its good that we get new music but Rap has been dominant for too long and it stiffles creativity.

I don't prefer rap music, but it is an expression of music as well as those that are well liked. There's also many different types of rap that can be respected. I agree that most of the mainstream rap is "rubbish" although that's a little harsh.
