Sometimes it is difficult to get into character. What they are looking for is someone who can relate with the audience but has something different. It also depends on what they are selling. Be familiar with the product, but don't go overboard by trying to kiss up to them.
Since you have a hard time making characters come alive, you should watch people's behavior including your own. What is your favorite product? How would you act if you wanted to tell your friend how great it is? Sometimes you will be unfamiliar in how to portray a particular emotion. Look to others - what would they do? What is the expression on their face?

Make sure your loud, have a clear voice, use great diction, use arm movements, and be confident. I have never done a commercial audition, but this helps in other auditions.

when you act, you must really feel the character you are trying to portray. you must feel it. you must BE the character.
