I often asked myself a similar question: How much should I intervene in shaping the lives of my children?
I have two biological children who are fairly well adjusted and self-sufficient. I enjoyed seeing them grow and occasionally coached soccer and went to band concerts. They played too much D&D and computer games but one is a student adviser at a university and the other is in grad school studying design of computer games. I occasionally think I should have been more active in shaping their lives but they are OK.
My foster sons require more guidance since the nine guys living with me now have serious problems, many take psychotropic medications and half are registered sex offenders. I don't think we can afford to just let them do what they want.
Your question is complex and there are a multitude of variables to consider.
