My belt was just replaced and it still has a slight "squeal" to it! I've heard that you can lubricate the belts slightly! What would be the best formula or lubricant to use? Oil, power steering fluid,????????

wow so many bad answers here. You should never put any kind of belt dressing or any other type of lubricant on a serpentine belt. If you have a squeal then you either have the wrong size belt or you have a bad pulley normally the idler pulley goes bad. Do what you must but I can tell you from many years of experience that you will regret putting any type of lubricant on a serpentine belt. The main reason is that the belt rides on smooth pulleys and if it gets oily it can and probably will slip off. Also it will deteriorate the rubber that the belt is made of. Take the belt off and spin all the pulleys and I bet you will find a small squeak in one of them. That is the problem I am sure.

Never use WD-40, or any kind of oil. Oil will ALWAYS cause rubber to perish.

You can get belt dressing from most auto parts stores, but first you should check the tensioner/idler pulley, if this wasn't changed at the same time as the belt. The added tension of a new belt will often cause it to fail, and this could be causing your squealing. Another possibility is the water pump bearing.

I tried soap, candle wax, paraffin, bacon grease, flour, silicon spray, most worked for a few minutes then the squeal came back. Then I bought a new belt, and I was good for about a year, then the squeal started coming back. Then I tried talcum powder(baby powder), that worked great for 9 months, until I drove in the rain. That will wash it off and the squeal will come back. Just add more baby powder, only takes about 1/4 teaspoon. These belts are expensive, and keeping a small container of baby powder in the vehicle will allow you to run your belt until it's old.

It may not be your belt thats squealing - it could be one of the accessories.

Best thing to do - and please be careful - start the engine and take a bar of soap to the inside of the belt in a well accessible area and hold it to the belt as it spins. You should hear the belt get quiet.

DON'T use WD-40 as suggested, that will lube way too much and could cause way more slip then you would want.

There is a belt dressing you can buy, but if your belt is squealing there is probably something wrong somewhere. Possibly in your water pump or who knows where. Something isn't running smoothly as it should and you could have a bearing going out someplace.

I had a belt that was squealing that would get louder with the engine so I took it off and cleaned the "rollers" and the belt itself with a rag and water, I rubbed it really good and put it back on and it went away. I don't know if it good bad or otherwise BUT IT WORKED!!!
