Ortega was a figment of the American liberal imagination. It was ultra chic to send him money to buy arms to try to overthrow the elected government of Nicaragua and so Ortega played along. You remember Dems, these are the folks who only support war if it is thought to be chic. So Oretega turned out to be a huge failure and when they had open elections they dumped his butt and he went back to doing pretty much nothing. So now he is like a neocon Nicaraguan. Don't guess Rosie and Babs are sending him any money but Bush might be.

Do you mean have his politics changed since his days as the leader of the Sandinistas? I would imagine so. Ortega was never a dogmatist, and Nicaragua has changed much since he was last in power in 1990. He retains a solid streak of populism, but now has to cope with a nation in which most resources have been privatised. He also no longer has to face crippling US sanctions against his nation. His policy goals probably remain fairly similar to those he had in the 1980s: prioritising education, housing and health for the most needy. However, in modern Nicaragua, those goals are less likely to be achieved by a Marxist, anti-capitalist programme.

Why would you care?

He was freely elected by his people.

What other leaders do is no concern of ours until they militarily threaten us.
