Out of favour, maybe, but she still has her supporters. Museums rotate exhibits all the time. It does seem that the museum is making a statement, though, as they could have put Irwin up without taking her down immediately. Clearly the decision-makers have been a bit subjective here. If the situation had been reversed, and Irwin had been replaced by Greer, there would have been quite an outcry.

Germaine Greer Nude

No, I don't think Greer is washed up. I do, however, think that it is a very embarrassing reflection on Australian popular opinion when a powerful image of an influential academic is replaced by a man in khaki who has built an empire off of a catchphrase.

Obviously many Australians find Irwin more personable and likable than Greer, and obviously her comments at the time of his death caused much public outrage. Lets not be too quick to forget though, that prior to his death, Steve Irwin was hardly the loved by all, great Aussie hero the media would like to have us think. Remember when he was crucified by the very same media outlets and outraged public for the baby in the croc pen incident?

On a related note, the article that was linked to earlier in this thread is absolutely disgraceful- it barely attempts to hide its bias (e.g. referring to Greer as an 'ex-pat loony' while portraying Irwin as an all-round Australian Icon). Just another example of the fine journalism at news.com.au.

Germaine Greer was born in 1939 and is no longer as well known a celebrity as she once was, although she has an illustrious history as an author and wild woman.

Washed up? Nah- I'd say she's just moved on.
