At least here in MN, you can go to the city or county and they keep all receords of the property. You can find out when the home was built, by who, any repairs to the property (if they pulled a permit), how much is owed on the mortgage etc...

A good idea might be to ask the surrounding neighbors. They might know of any natural disaster that have happened in the neighborhood/town or even known the neighbors and the conditions of the home.
