Because where they have been allowed in the past, problems have always come up.
In my local ISD, they allow cellphones to be in schools but not turned on and not in sight; they can only be turned on outside school and after school.

Cell phones should not be allowed in school because it takes attention away from learning...the ultimate objective of school. A ringing cell phone creates a distraction during class. Also text messaging creates an avenue for cheating. Why would a child need to make a phone call during the school day anyway? They are not high powered businessmen and women or doctors on call yet. They simply do not need it.

Its a distraction! They should develop special "Student" cell-phones that can be locked to only call 911 and the Parent's assigned phone numbers. THEN they should be allowed to have cell-phones.
Most school children take advantage and sent text messages back and forth, forget to turn off the cell phone and well - its a distraction. Children are in school to learn, not to good off.

I tend to support them, but I do see the problems.
One major problem recently is fighting. Lets say that two students want to fight. They call their family and their neighbors to come help them. What may result is a melee of about 50 people and a dozen arrests with most of them not even attending that school.
Another is cheating, particularly if the phone has a camera or can be hidden well.

They send text messages to each other and cheat on tests.
Cell phones can be used to arrange drug deals.
It is a distraction from the true purpose of being in school: to get an education.
And my "least favorite" one: In the event of a bomb scare, a ringing cell phone can detonate a bomb.

Cell phones aren't needed in a classroom. I can understand needing them after school sometimes, but in the classroom, they're distracting, students can photograph tests and send them to friends, text messaging is just another form of passing notes, and kids aren't mature enough not to sit and play with them during class...

Interesting 'signature' you have there . . . seems you were seeking something unique? I think you found it . . .
Cell phones? in schools?
amazing how we ever got along without the confounded intruders, huh? I'm all for throwing them ALL in the trash. . . kids don't need more distractions taking them away from learning - and they certainly don't need mommy available M/F during school hours. . . that's what teachers are for.

Why should we? Kids have enough distractions as it is, we don't need to give them another one. We weren't allowed to have them (I graduated in 2000) and we survived. When can you use them anyway? In between classes? Isn't that what notes are for? Give me a break. If we're gonna keep doing this we might as well just go ahead and give them a choice wether they wanna go or not. There has to be SOME kind of boundaries.

Because kids should be concentrating on their education instead of chatting with their various buddies during the school day. They can get together after school.

Because kids should be listening to the teacher instead of playing around with phones, and because they will become satus symbols which not everyone can afford, thus leading to more teasing & bullying on the playground.
