If you want free traffic, what you need is link bait. Include original content on your Web site that will resonate with a lot of people, then submit your link to digg, reddit, stumbleupon, and other social bookmarking sites. Try a google search for "link bait" to get ideas about what you can do.
Other free ways to get people to your company Web site:
*Visit blogs on a related subject and post quality comments - most blogs will allow you to link your username to your Web site.
*Find relevant Web forums and post good content. Include your URL in your signature (if allowed) or profile.
*Start a company blog. Write useful content that will attract visitors to your site while making them aware of your business.
And some cheap ways:
*Advertise via PPC engines - depending on your niche, you may be able to get visitors for a penny a click.
*Run a contest that requires people to visit your site to participate and offer a prize. You can announce the contest on your blog, via a press release, or you can ask related Web sites to publicize it for you.
*Use a service like reviewme.com to get your site reviewed by bloggers.

Depends on what your site is about. I think that the best way to get people to your site to see what you offer or to call your business is PPC/ search engine marketing. The great thing about search is that you only pay when someone clicks on your ad. When people search for a keyword that you select they are basically raising their hand and saying they are interested in what you have to offer. If they don't click on your ad - you lose nothing. If they do click you pay a minimal cost and have driven a qualified 'lead' to your site. The top search engines are google, yahoo search and msn (much smaller than the other two). If you do no other advertising - just do search engine advertising.

The best way is.....not to. People don't go on the Net looking for ads - usually.
