if u are in an area that has loads of twisty roads close by, a sport bike would be fun, but if these roads are 2 hrs or more away, then it wouldnt be quite as good; long distance riding isnt 1 of their forte's. if all u have is flat land, it would be better to get a cruiser. a 750cc or a 1000cc would do good. the bigger the bike, the smoother the ride. most cruiser's except the sportsters dont have nearly the amount of quickness a crotch rocket would have...they're just not designed to be that quick. but the sportsters and wide glides can be quick handling bikes. i have no problem flicking my sportster thru the twisties as fast as i dare to go.
now how about price? u get what u pay for in most cases. new will always be more. u might find some deals on cycletrader.com, ebay, or craigslist, but under no circumstances should u send any cash out for any bike unless u can get a actual visual on the bike. that means to only deal locally or within a distance u'd be willing to drive.

My two favourite choices are the Kawi 250 Ninja and the Honda 250 Rebel. Both bikes are low and light (especially the Ninja 250).
The Rebel gives you the road bike feel where you're sitting back with your feet more foreward. And the Ninja is a sportbike but it doesn't hunch you as far foreward as some do. Both are comfortable riding bikes in my opinion.
You can find parts easily for both bikes. And both are reliable and forgiving. My son has a Ninja 250 and loves it (he's 15).

I went from a Honda Rebel 250 to a VLX600 and now I'm riding a 750 Shadow Ace. Personally, I preferred to start out small and as my skill level and confidence grew I gradually moved on up. Next month I'll be taking an Advanced Rider Course and perhaps next year I might move on up again. But maybe not, because I absolutely love my candy-apple red/chrome Shadow. Good Luck and keep the shiny side up.

Honda Rebel 250 , thousands of riders took their first ride on this one and passed their licence on this bike, low seat height, handles easily, enough zip for the beginner.

Depends on your size and height. Shorter, smaller people need a lighter bike for a beginner such as a Suzuki gs250 for example

250 Ninja . . . if you like that style of bike. Even brand new they're very inexpensive.
