I figured that if they sell them at best buy they must be legal

They are legal. I would suggest a Passport Radar detector if you can afford it. When I was in the Navy I bought one because my wife was living 6 hours away and pregnant. When the call came she was heading to the hospital, I was doing 115 in my camry when the governor kicked in, a rice burner thought I was trying to race him, then the detector went off.....I thought I was going to jail. I quickly slowed and got into the far right lane while the rice burner kept on, the cop was so far back when it detected him he had no clue I was also speeding, about 2 miles down the road the cops had the guy in the rice burner in cuffs, and I made a 6 hour drive in less than 3......
