Should i get mad when people make fun of my name?

Question

My name is Chardonnay if u don't know it is french and it is a wine.... to pronounce it is (Shar-doe-nay).Chardonnay is also the name of a French village located in the Saône-et-Loire Department in the Bourgogne. But i am African American and to people my name is just Ghetto and they say my mother must have been drunk when she gave me my name which really offends me! Should i get mad how should i handle it?

just pick some better friends, some that are not so immature

and also, don't take it personal

just remember that there are people that love your name, just as much as your mom probably did, when she decided to name you that way

Tell them you've been hearing that joke all your life and you got sick of it years ago. Tell them nicely. Then tell them very nicely a second time when they get defensive. Escalate only slowly.

I HAVE refused to stop speaking to somebody because he insisted on making the same joke about my name more or less weekly, and I asked him nicely a number of times to stop.

Or if they're just critical of the name tell them cooly "I like it."

Frankly, somebody who says "That's a stupid name" is clearly being a jerk, while somebody who makes a lame joke may just be having a brain fart. I'd react a little differently in the two situations.

I'm assuming that you're at least 13-14 years old. If you're younger than that -- well, kids can be awful about this sort of thing. You might want to pick a nickname for yourself to get by in the mean time.

They're just immature. Chardonnay is a very sensual name and you probably just need to hang with a better crowd.
