The depth of planting varies with the type of crop being grown. For example beans are planted at a greater depth than wheat. Larger tractors can pull wider ploughs that cover the ground more quickly than smaller tractors with narrower ploughs.

I agree with the time spent ploughing the field. The bigger the tractor, the heavier it will be. And they have a habit of compacting the soil. If the land isn't ploughed it will compact the soil (it got a proper name, can't remember though) and the roots won't get the best environment to grow in.
