Other people's children, especially when they go on about how brilliant their kids are.
I met a woman couple months ago who got tired of her coworkers going on about how brilliant their grandchildren were, so she turned around and said "I've got 23 grandchildren, and they're all as dumb as a brick, but they sure are cute!" She said she didn't hear anything more about grandkids for months.

I'd have to say the weather. It's the ultimate ice-breaker, I suppose, but it's also the most bland subject imaginable. We live in the same area! I know what the weather is! The only way to answer in an original way is to come out as a complete weirdo:
-It's cold, isn't it?
-I wouldn't know. I don't go outside. I figured I could save rent and food money by sleeping under my desk, eating off the staff fridge and washing my clothes in the sink at night when everybody's gone home.

Other People's Children followed a close second with their dreams.
We have three boys and damned if I want to sit in the pub and hear people yack about theirs while I am trying to get a break away from mine.
