First there is no winning in Iraq. It is a civil war.
Second, the threat of terror is worse than ever because of the pointless war in Iraq. Conservatives still think we are there to win something, but common knowledge tells us there is really nothing to win unless we plan on staying for a long long time. And Conservatives still support the troop surge that will no doubt lead to further American causalities.

What happen to Q&A and dialogue? The bulk of this stuff in USA Politics & Gov just seems to be about venting. What does it accomplish? No one seems any happier for it ... the postings never improve. No one is informing anyone. If anyone even had a valid point sandwiched in the criticism, it would get lost. What a disappointment.
I see Y!A is limiting thumbs up and thumbs down ... removing some of them after placement. I noticed because I check back to see additional answers on some questions today, hoping for some real input and that's when I saw the thumbs up and downs had been removed. It was kind of pleasant actually. It was like seeing a wall freshly painted after gangland graffetti has been removed.
I see you're trying to tone down the questions a bit and not ranting makes the issues easier to consider. Conservatives, Liberals, Moderates and Independants have one thing in common. The decisions we made or didn't make and supported or didn't support, will be judged hindsight by future generations. I don't want to be seen as a generation that spent so much time bicker and picking fights with each other within our own borders, that we had no serious dialogue on the issues. I hope you aren't trying to pick another fight out the backdoor of the bar ... we All have a long way to go.

We CAN and WILL win the war in Iraq if given the time and opportunity.
The problem is that Americans tend to be very short-sighted. As such, they do not understand that the terrorists such as Osama Bin Ladin are planning their actions around achieving their goals over a hundred years or more. This means that they are going to keep coming at us for a very long time.
The question then becomes, where do we want to fight the terrorists? Do we want to seek them out where they live and take the battle to them or do we want to stay at home "safe" and let them take the battle to us?
There is no answer to your question because we are not talking about battle lines on some map or conquering a country or region. This is a whole different type of warfare. This war is a war over ideology. It's a war against people who believe that martyrdom gets you to heaven and the more people you kill in the process the higher your place in heaven will be. It doesn't deal in percentages, it deals in death.

Iraq is merely one battle ground. You can't assign a percentage to it. That's the problem, your looking at this all wrong - which is typical. Do you know anything about radical Islam? Are you aware that there are groups in every corner of the globe, except Antarctica? It is the main battle ground now, that will change. Its a moving target obviously. We're in Iraq to try to give the Iraqi people a chance at something other than becoming another radical Islamic state. I'm sorry, but your life will never be like it was before 9/11/01. Do you get that???

If you are genuinely curious about what progess we've made and where we're going, read this:
http://www.state.gov/p/nea/rls/rm/2006/63584.htm
If you're just stirring the pot, let me ask you this: when will the war on child molestation be over? how about the war on crime or the war on drugs? Where are we in those fights?
The point is that when you are talking about a war on terror. You are not talking about a war against a specific country with uniformed soldiers. You're talking about clearing away as many hot beds of terror as possible and Bush has spoken to that so if you're up on politics I don't need to explain any further.
As long as there are terrorists, there will always be a need to fight them unless we want to simply give in to them. Those, really, are the choices.
People feel the war has gone on far too long. We're talking about the middle east! They have been fighting for centuries. If we can help make that region more stable, we've done what no one else has ever been able to do in history and the world will be much better for it.
How long will the war take? As long as it takes. How long should we support the troops? As far as I'm concerned we should support them as long as they're protecting our freedoms and guarding our liberty. How long should we fight terrorism, drugs, murder and child molestation? As long as it's still happening.

Exactly! Do you guys actually think the Iraq is HELPING us? It's having the opposite effect.
The war on terror itself it ridiculous. There cannot be a "war" in which we will be able to fight or defeat terror. Terror, no matter how much anyone tries to stop it, will exist, always and forever. No matter how many wars you start, there will be that one guy that wishes to, and does, kill another. You can't stop it. Why America is buying Bush's "War on Terror" BS is absolutely beyond me.

a long ways. Im not saying we should invade every country, but the terror networks have people in alamost every country. Iraq, wasnt sure that was the best target. However, we picked it, so we should finish it. It seems that other than local violence, terror networks are not doing so well now as they were pre-9/11. So, that is a good sign.

for my area the two are by no potential linked. conflict on Terror = justified and supported via the international minus the terrorists conflict in Iraq = have not relatively discovered why we are in there on the 1st place. each and every of the sadder considering that patriotic squaddies are loss of life... over a murky reason. i think of we would desire to continuously go away Iraq and choose actual element that'd help us decide how can we actually get to the terrorists. dropping financial/diplomatic means and our stable solder's stay are basically no longer helping the conflict on Terror in any comprehend.

well if i would be a conservative, thing that i dont, i would say that a victory in irak would create a model of democracy in the islamic world and with the oil we could reduce our deficit and win to the new poweful russian oil companies. propably the 50% of the war on terror. But that's a foolish dream the democracy only can be achievement of an internal revolution and evolution and with the sabotage that oil will never come

Victory in Iraq will be a huge step forward, but the war on terror will NEVER be over. Just like the war on drugs. This country will ALWAYS be spending billions each year tracking and hunting terrorist cells throughout the world to make sure that there will never be another 911. Gone are the days of country versus country, army versus army, and allies versus axis. We are witnessing a new generation of warfare in the form of terrorists dressed like you and me blowing themselves up in restaurants, shops, and on planes and boats. Therefore the war on terror will never be won, but it will continue to be fought.
