Will putting salt during a fire keep the flue clean

Never heard of that. There are flue cleaners you can buy like someone mentioned. The best thing is to hire a chimney sweep. You definitely DON'T want a chimney fire. Whatever you do, don't burn pine - even really old, dry pine. Pine is full of sap and will create a creosote build up in your chimney. You could use pine sticks to start your fire, just don't put any logs in. A good way to keep your chimney from developing gunk on it is to burn hot fires. In other words, you want flames, not smoldering. Hot fires tend to burn off creosote.

No, Where do rumors like this come from? I have heard this before but it is not true. Salt added to your fireplace wood during a burn does not help clean your fireplace.

Personally i use my fireplace about 6 times per year. I clean it myself with a brush every 2 years (in the summer) and have a chimney sweep come and do it every 4 years. But that is for a fireplace that gets very little use.

I have used the chimney sweep logs but they really only help to a small degree to make your creasote less flamable. They certainly dont hurt but my opinion is they are falsly advertised if they say they "clean" your chimney.

There is nothing like a good chimney scrubbing every so often.

NO. You need to hire a professional chimney sweep to come in and clean it. Do that at least once a year before you use your fireplace again. Not having it professionally cleaned is a fire danger. Your chimney collects soot and it could ignite and cause a MAJOR house fire.

I dont think so there is a new product out there "Chimney Sweeper" it is a log you place in the fireplace light it on fire and it cleans your chimney...if it is in really bad shape call a professional. I think the log is for routine cleanings once a month or so.
