I have 2 sata drives as boot and secondary. Today I bought another drive (eide) but when I added it Windows says it can't read the boot drive anymore so it won't boot. I tried every combination of slave/master/ide1/ide2 but no joy. I have a dvd-r drive on ide2 and never had a problem I even removed the dvd-r to see if it would make a diff but no.

-Did that too. Not that adding a drive should change the boot priority, but I did check and it's still sata1, sata2.

you could check the BIOS on what drive is the priority to boot first.
